Summer Education Intern

The mission of the Galveston Arts Center is to engage, inform, provoke, and inspire through the exploration of contemporary art.
Position Overview
Galveston Arts Center (GAC) seeks a responsible and creative Summer Education Intern to support our vibrant summer art camps for youth & teens. This position offers hands-on experience in arts education, nonprofit administration, and classroom management. The intern will assist teaching artists, help prepare and organize classroom materials, monitor student engagement, and contribute to GAC’s administrative organizational structures for the education department.
Pay
Hourly, $15 per hour
Temporary, for summer
Part-time (Mid-May to Mid-August)
Responsibilities
Serve as a Teaching Assistant during youth & teen art camps by supporting instruction and classroom management (minimum 20 hours/week)
Prepare lesson materials in advance based on a weekly checklist (90% of supplies prepped before Monday morning each week)
Assist with cleanup at the end of each class session (daily) alongside the teaching artist
Monitor student needs, provide one-on-one or small group support as directed, and report daily observations to camp staff (track in daily log)
Supervise campers during lunch and break times (1 hour daily)
Assist with the organization and upkeep of the classroom and the inventory of supplies
Assist with the creation of standard operating procedures for the education department
Participate in a weekly check-in with the Executive Director and Education Director to track progress and ensure learning goals are met
Ideal Candidate
Experience working with children in a classroom, camp, or volunteer setting
Strong communication skills, with an eye for detail and creativity
Proficient in all Microsoft programming
Organized, punctual, and able to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, art-filled environment
Understand and carry out oral and written directions.
Maintain the confidentiality of information and professional boundaries.

The position may, on occasion, exert 50 pounds of force, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly moving objects.
Schedule
Approximately 25–30 hours/week, Monday–Friday, Mid-May through Mid-August. Specific hours will vary based on camp scheduling.
