Director of Education Position Summary
Mission
The mission of the Galveston Arts Center is to engage, inform, provoke, and inspire through the exploration of contemporary art. As a noncollecting, nonprofit contemporary art museum, Galveston Arts Center furthers the careers of emerging and mid-career artists living and working in Texas and the surrounding region through the production of exhibitions and supporting media. GAC’s wide-ranging, collaborative educational programs offer accessible and inclusive opportunities for diverse audiences to explore art for a deeper understanding of themselves and the world around them.
Job Summary
The Director of Education is responsible for the creative vision and strategic direction of all educational initiatives at Galveston Arts Center. This includes conceptualizing, developing, planning, implementing, and evaluating all onsite and off-site education programs. This position reports directly to the Executive Director. This is a full-time, exempt position. The schedule reflects educational programming, GAC open hours, ArtWalk, and other occasional obligations.
Primary Responsibilities
Define goals and maintain the vision and quality of GAC’s educational initiatives, including community engagement programs, group tours, adult classes and workshops, youth programs, and student art exhibitions.
Collaborate across departments to enhance educational initiatives in alignment with GAC’s values/strategic plan.
Ensure effective communication with/between Teaching Artists, community partners, and program participants.
Regularly evaluate all educational programs, systems, resources, and personnel for effectiveness and sustainability, identifying weaknesses and strategies for improvement.
Develop and oversee new earned income education initiatives.
Network and stay current on best practices in the field of community arts education.
Maintain financial controls of the education program income and expenses.
Track program participation, including demographic information when possible.
Coordinate with GAC’s social media manager to ensure promotional materials are readily available.
Assist in the design, production, and/or distribution of promotional materials.
Write education-related grant proposals and reports.
Oversee the documentation of program activities, including participant photograph release forms, where applicable.
Create and present education reports/updates at GAC’s quarterly board meetings.
Supervise all teaching artists for studio programs and outreach programs, including writing contracts, performance reviews, and planning for substitutions if needed.
Supervise Art for All: write and update memoranda of understanding, maintain relationships with Art for All partners, participate in site visits each season, and track participation and demographics when possible.
Experience and Skills
Bachelor’s degree or 4 years equivalent experience in an Education or Arts-related field, preferred.
Experience developing TEKS-based curriculum or interdisciplinary art lesson plans.
Experience collaborating or partnering with community organizations and/or schools.
Passion for community arts education and commitment to excellence.
Strong leadership skills with the ability to embrace a diverse workplace and visitor base.
Excellent administrative, organizational, and customer service skills.
Excellent oral and written communication and presentation skills.
Excellent time management skills with the ability to coordinate multiple projects at once.
Proficiency in standard Microsoft and/or Google business applications.
Basic graphic design skills using drag-and-drop tools.
Ability to identify key performance indicators, anticipate challenges, and problem-solve.
Strong work ethic, positivity, creativity, flexibility, and ability to give and receive constructive feedback.
