How You Can Help:

Special Events

Each year, GAC hosts eight art exhibition openings during ArtWalk, a number of parties and fundraiser events.   Help prepare materials, set up, greet guests, manage crowds, serve refreshments, and clean up to ensure everyone has a great time. Volunteers also help GAC staff and teachers host art activities and information booths at local festivals, trade shows, and community functions such as Dickens on the Strand, The Grand Kids Festival, and Mardi Gras, to name just a few. Lend a hand and gain free admission to the event!

Desk Team/Gallery Monitors

Members of our Desk team come in once a week to greet visitors at the front desk, keep an eye on the galleries and help us catch up on general administrative work such as data entry, answering the phone, and helping with bulk mailings. Tasks vary from week to week; for example, you might enter emails from our guest book to our mailing list or update online calendars with our upcoming events.

Shifts available Tuesday through Friday between 12:00 PM - 5:00 PM.

Weekend Docents

Docents are volunteer educators who guide visitors through Galveston Arts Center’s exhibitions and help control traffic. They facilitate dialogue that helps visitors find connections between themselves and a wide variety of concepts and themes in contemporary art.

No visual arts background is necessary, however, docents should at least appreciate contemporary art and believe in GAC’s Mission. Docents must attend a scheduled orientation for each exhibit, attend or watch a video of the artists’ talk at the opening reception (which is during ArtWalk.)

Shifts available every Saturday and Sunday between 12:00 - 5:00 PM, we ask that weekend volunteers commit to a minimum of two hours per shift.

Street Team

Members of the Street Team will help out once or twice a month by distributing brochures, flyers, and generally spreading the word around town about the great things going on at GAC.

Handy Volunteers

Do you have skills in carpentry, woodworking, painting, licensed plumbing or electrical wiring? Perhaps you enjoy cleaning, organizing, or have experience installing artwork. Lend us a hand by coming in at regular intervals to keep our building looking great, or periodically as needed for special projects.
