December 2, 2017 | 11:00 AM - 5:00 PM

This year, visitors to Dickens on the Strand™ can bring home the gift of a custom, hand-made silhouette from Galveston Arts Center.

Patti Rishforth of HeartPaperScissors.com will be creating silhouettes in the lobby of Galveston Arts Center from 11:00 AM-5:00 PM* on Saturday, Dec 2, capturing people’s likeness in profile with just a few snips of her shears.

This economical yet elegant form of art was popularized during a time when photographic portraiture was not yet common and having one’s portrait painted was quite costly. Today, framed silhouettes retain a classic, even modern appeal and are often passed down from one generation to the next.

Silhouettes take only a few minutes to create, and prices start at $35 for a right and left copy.  Additional copies are $10 each.  Those who wish to schedule an appointment to have their silhouette done on Saturday may do so by calling Galveston Arts Center at (409)763-2403 and leaving their name and a call-back number.  Drop-ins are also welcome and will be taken on a first-come-first-served basis.

Tickets to Dickens on the Strand™ are sold separately through Galveston Historical Foundation.  Please visit www.galvestonhistory.org/events/dickens-on-the-strand/ for pricing, entry and other information.

About the Artist
Having more than 20 years’ experience painting portraits, artist Patti Rishforth knows the most rich and accurate portraits can be painted in just a few sweeps of a brush. Silhouettes push this concept by omitting skin color, hair color, eye color, even attire, leaving only the basic essence of that person for the viewer to recognize. That is why she often refers to silhouettes as portraits of the soul.
