In an effort to promote Texas artists working in glass and those using it as a major component in their art works, the GAC is proud to present the first Texas Juried Glass exhibition. Craftsmen and women have been shaping and coloring glass for centuries.  Recently, the use of glass in its traditional forms and in unexpected ways as a “new” material has gained increasing recognition in the fine arts community. Contemporary artists push the definition of glass and display a heightened energy while exploring its inherent properties, often with astonishing results. Our esteemed panel of judges selected from entries solicited by an open call to all artists living and working in Texas.  Prizes to be announced are the Davis Ryan Glass Prize of $1250, second prize of $600 and third prize of $300 and two Juror’s Award of Merit.  Making the selections were: Tina Oldknow, Curator of Modern Glass, Corning Museum of Glass, Corning, New York; Mary Shaffer, Internationally recognized glass artist, Marfa, Texas and El Prado, New Mexico; Patricia Meadows, Dallas-based Senior Curator and Collection Manager for the Hall Collection.

Texas Juried Glass is an important exhibition for the region and for the art community. Never before has an arts space offered an opportunity to see what is happening in contemporary glass, now, across a particular region.  Juror Tina Oldknow, commented “I wish every state would do this.”

Highlights of the selections include traditional uses of the material such as blown and stained glass and pate de verre. Exhibiting artists often combined traditional glass methods with classic sculpture building techniques.  Even more unusual uses describe combinations such as: blown glass with charcoal drawing, stacked glass jars with curious contents, glass blocks and video monitors, neon with aluminum and Plexiglas, and many more surprises.  Twenty-nine artists, including three collaborative teams, will exhibit a total of 34 new artworks.

The exhibition opening March 5th, takes place during Galveston’s ArtWalk, a celebration of the arts throughout Galveston’s historic

Strand district that happens every 6 -8 weeks.
